U4A6 -- Magazine Cover
Above are some examples of magazine covers that some of my students have created in the past. The objectives and directions for the magazine cover are below:
What I will be doing:
Using Photoshop, I will be able to invent and design an original magazine cover about me that has the appearance of a commercially produced product. I will apply design principles to my work.
I will explain how I used type layout principles in my work. I will also explain which tools in Photoshop I used to create my design.
Click on the "videos and tutorials" page of this website to find a video that will help you get started with your magazine cover in Photoshop (the video is towards the bottom of the page and is called "getting started with your magazine cover."
Submit your magazine as an attachment to your submission in blackboard. Be sure to include information about how you used the Type Layout principles.
What I will be doing:
Using Photoshop, I will be able to invent and design an original magazine cover about me that has the appearance of a commercially produced product. I will apply design principles to my work.
- Apply Text Style, Treatment, and Position. Is the style and treatment of my text appropriate for the theme of the Magazine? Is the text positioned appropriately on the magazine cover?
- Demonstrate effective use of the tools in Adobe Photoshop.
I will explain how I used type layout principles in my work. I will also explain which tools in Photoshop I used to create my design.
- The magazine name and cover is your original idea and design. You may use 1 or 2 small images from the Internet to complement your design, but your main idea should come from you. Use Photoshop to add some artistic effects.
- Since this magazine will be about you, you will need to take a picture of yourself or use one that you already have.
- Your magazine cover is designed for an 8 ½” X 11” design space. Your resolution should be 72 dpi (or ppi). If we were printing your magazine cover, we would want a much higher resolution, such 300 ppi, but since we will just be viewing this on the web, a 72 ppi resolution will allow the image to load much faster.
- Include price and UPC symbol in your design.
- You will need to explain how you used type style, treatment, and position in your magazine cover. You may type this information into the submission box in blackboard when you submit your magazine cover. In your explanation, provide the website of any images you used in your magazine cover.
- In regards to text, you should have:
- A masthead/banner (main title of magazine)
- Headline (describes what the theme of the magazine is)
- 2-3 Sub-headings (highlight different articles in the magazine)
- The final product has the look of a professionally and commercially produced design.
- The first step is to start your design on paper. Doing this will encourage you to be more creative. When we start our design on the computer first, we limit ourselves to what we know how to do. If you have questions about how to do something, please ask!
Analyze a Magazine Cover (Your next design project will be to create your own magazine cover)
- Look for a magazine cover to analyze. Find one that includes plenty of type examples. Include the website where you got the cover image.
- Identify and explain the THREE type layout concepts (Type Style, Treatment, & Position). Be descriptive and specific.
- Also, analyze the magazine cover for something different than type layout principles. This could be related to color, balance, unity, etc. This is an opportunity to further develop your ability to "think like a graphic designer."
- You could create this document in Photoshop or PowerPoint (PowerPoint lets you save your slide as a .jpg image). Upload your document to your website.
- You may want to review some information about type layout principles. The links below will help provide you with this information. Some examples are also shown below.

Click on the "Type Layout Text" link above. This link will open some text that provides a summary of type layout principles. You are going to use this text to create your "layout." You will want to copy this text into a new document (Microsoft Word or Publisher). Your goal in this layout is to take this boring text and turn it into a document that is both visually appealing and will help your readers understand the type layout principles. Follow the directions below to help you do this:
- Use a SERIF or SANS SERIF font for the text in each paragraph (headings can be in a different font). This will ensure that the text will be readable. (5 pts)
- There are seven sections of text, each with a 1-2 word title above it. Change each title using your knowledge of type TREATMENT and STYLE. The title above each section of text is actually more important than the text, so you want to make it to stand out. Including a title will allow the reader to easily identify the topic of each section, its importance, and it will also help organize the document. (7 pts)
- Not all sections are of the same importance. Put each section in order of importance: Type Layout (1); About Style (2); Treatments (3); Position (4); Four styles (5); Size (6); Effects (7). Reorganizing the sections in this order will make more sense to the reader. (7 pts)
- Insert a graphic of your choosing and deal with the concept of POSITION. How text relates to an image can help create visual interest or draw attention to a section, indicating importance. (5 pts)
- Add any other formatting you feel would help make this an interesting document. Here's your chance to experiment and impress! You may want to add additional Type Styles & Treatments, add more images, or change the Position of text/images on the page. You might consider putting your page into columns or using text boxes to further organize the information. (6 points)
- Save your layout with a .jpg file extension and upload it to your website. (Total: 25 pts) Look at the examples below. These examples show different levels of effort. Just push play to view the examples. You may have to pause the video to read the all the text. Do your best to create a well designed layout.
Font Portrait
